The GM 10.5" axle, more commonly known as the GM 14 Bolt, has been around since the 1970s and can be found under Chevy and GMC full size trucks and SUVs even today. The axle uses a large 10.5" diameter ring gear and features a secondary pinion support bearing to handle more power and torque.
Due to its strength, plentiful availability, and healthy aftermarket support, the GM 14 bolt has become an extremely popular rear axle swap for off-road vehicles and custom builds, usually paired with a Dana 60 front axle.
In response to the popularity of aftermarket axle housing and the increasing number of GM 14 bolt axles modified for front axle applications, 14 Bolt Crown Race Gears have been specifically designed for use in reverse rotation applications and have a polished backside for reduced friction on load bolts. They are also available in high clearance configurations to clear shaved axles.
Note that all GM 10.5" axles have a 4.10/4.56 carrier break. Differentials designed for 4.10 and numerically lower gears require "thick" gears for 4.56 and higher ratios. Differentials built for 5.56 and numerically higher ratios require standard (non-thick) gears and will not work with 4.10 and lower gears. (For more information and carrier breaks, click here.)
